What are common problems with electric boilers?
Common problems with electric boilers include incorrect sizing, high running costs, electrical supply issues, and problems caused by poor water quality. If the boiler is too small, it may struggle to heat the property properly. If it is too large for the electrical supply, it may trip the electrics or require costly upgrades.
Scale build-up can also be an issue, especially in hard water areas. Scale can build up on the heating elements, which reduces performance and may shorten the life of the boiler. Like any wet central heating system, electric boilers can also be affected by airlocks, pressure loss, leaking valves, faulty pumps, sludge in radiators, or blocked pipework.
Regulations and industry standards like BS 7593:2019 require heating systems to be flushed and chemically treated. A magnetic dirt and air separator is often recommended or required to protect boiler and circulator pumps and ensure continued long-term protection of the heating system. Adhering to these standards will prevent any potential problems mentioned above.
Many problems arise not from the boiler itself but from poor system design, incorrect installation, weak controls, or lack of maintenance. A correctly sized boiler, clean heating system, proper electrical supply, and effective controls will help avoid most common issues.
