Do electric boilers need servicing every year?
Boiler warranty compliance
Most manufacturers require annual servicing of the boiler to keep the warranty valid. If you miss a year, you will most likely void your cover.
Electrical Safety
Electric boilers require high current. Repeated thermal cycling (heating and cooling) over time may cause electrical connections to loosen and create a potential fire hazard. A service makes sure all connections are secure.
Heating system health
The boiler is simple in itself, but it is part of a larger wet central heating system. An engineer will test for leaks, test pressure, test inhibitor levels and test pumps and valves to ensure they work properly. They also inspect the heating elements for limescale build-up, which reduces efficiency considerably.
Durability and Longevity
Regular maintenance can identify small electrical or mechanical issues before they turn into costly breakdowns.
Who’s going to do it?
This task must be done by a heating engineer who is also electrically competent – usually someone who is dual qualified as an engineer and electrician or a registered electrician working with a plumber.
To summarise, an annual service is not a legal requirement in the UK, but it is very much worth having to protect your investment, promote safety and maintain top efficiency.
