Can a plumber fit an electric boiler?
Can a plumber fit an electric boiler? Yes, a plumber can fit an electric boiler, but only if they are suitably competent for the type of work being carried out. In the UK, an electric boiler installation normally involves both plumbing and electrical work, so it may require a plumber or heating engineer and a qualified electrician. However, some heating engineers hold dual qualifications in both heating and electrical fields.
A plumber or heating engineer can usually install the wet heating side of the system. This may include connecting the boiler to the radiators, underfloor heating, pipework, filling loop, pressure relief pipework, expansion vessel, system controls, etc. They should understand sealed heating systems, flow and return pipework, system flushing, inhibitor, pump requirements and correct boiler sizing.
However, the electrical side is different. Electric boilers can place a high electrical load on the property, especially larger models. A suitably qualified electrician must check the electrical supply, cable size, circuit protection, isolation, consumer unit capacity and earthing arrangements. In domestic properties, electrical installation work must comply with Building Regulations Part P, which covers electrical safety in dwellings.
For some installations, the electrical work may also need to be notifiable under Building Regulations. A registered competent person can self-certify certain types of building work instead of the homeowner applying separately for building regulations approval. The UK government also lists competent person schemes for installers who can self-certify work in their trade.

In simple terms, a plumber can install the pipework and heating side of an electric boiler, but the electrical connection should be carried out, checked and certified by a qualified electrician. The best approach is to use an installer who understands electric boilers and works alongside, or is also, a qualified electrical professional.
For safety, warranty and compliance, an electric boiler should always be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the relevant UK Building Regulations.
