Do electric boilers require a chimney or flue?
No, electric boilers do not require a chimney or flue.
Unlike gas, oil, LPG, or solid fuel boilers, an electric boiler does not burn fuel to produce heat. Instead, it uses electrical heating elements to heat water for central heating and, depending on the system, domestic hot water. Because there is no combustion process, there are no flue gases, smoke, fumes, or carbon monoxide produced by the boiler itself. This means there is no need for a chimney, flue pipe, balanced flue, fan-assisted flue, or external wall terminal with an electric boiler.
This is one of the main advantages of electric boilers, especially in flats, apartments, extensions, listed buildings, offices, workshops, and properties where installing a flue would be difficult or expensive. It also allows more flexibility in boiler installation, as it does not need to be near an outside wall or existing chimney route.
However, an electric boiler still needs to be installed correctly by a competent installer. The electrical supply must be suitable for the boiler’s power rating, and larger electric boilers may require a dedicated circuit or three-phase electrical supply. The heating system also needs the correct pipework, controls, expansion vessel, safety valves, and commissioning.
Therefore, while electric boilers do not require a chimney, they do require proper electrical and heating system installation to operate safely and efficiently. For more information on our dedicated webpage – heating electric boilers range
