How reliable are electric boilers?
Electric boilers are very reliable and tend to last longer than gas or oil boilers. They have many less moving parts because they don’t burn fuel. There are no flues, no combustion chambers, no gas valves and no complex fans to go wrong, dramatically reducing the potential for mechanical failure. If installed properly, a good quality electric boiler can easily last 15 years or more.
If problems do happen, they are generally easy to diagnose and fix. Items that wear out quickly are contactors, relays and circulating pumps, which are cheap and quick to replace. While the heating elements themselves are very durable, they can prematurely fail if the system water is heavily limescaled or has no proper chemical inhibitor.

Ultimately, their mechanical simplicity is their main advantage. Electric boilers don’t have the issues of fossil fuel boilers, such as soot, carbon build-up or tricky combusting mechanics. So, as long as you keep the wider central heating system clean and well-maintained, electric boilers are a very reliable and low-maintenance option.
