What is a destrat?
What is a destrat? A “destrat” is a shortened term for a destratification fan. It is a fan used in buildings with high ceilings to help reduce warm air build-up at roof level. In large spaces such as warehouses, factories, workshops, retail units, sports halls, and industrial buildings, warm air naturally rises while cooler air stays lower down. This creates temperature layers within the building, which is known as thermal stratification.
A destrat helps by moving the warm air from high level back down towards the occupied area. This helps mix the air more evenly and reduces the temperature difference between the ceiling and the floor. As a result, the heating system can work more efficiently because it wastes less heat at roof level. Our full range of this product range are detailed here – Destratification fans
Destrats are commonly used with warm air heaters, radiant heating, heat pumps, boilers, and other commercial or industrial heating systems. They can help improve comfort for people working at floor level, reduce heating running costs, and make better use of the heat that they already produce.
A destrat is not usually designed to create a strong cooling breeze like a standard fan. Its main purpose is to gently circulate air and push trapped warm air back into the useful heated space. When correctly selected and installed, a destrat can be a simple and effective way to improve heating efficiency in high-ceiling buildings.
