What is a heating buffer tank? A heating buffer tank is a water-filled vessel that is installed in a central heating or low-temperature heating system to increase the total volume of water in the system. Its main purpose is to store a small amount of thermal energy and help the heat source operate more steadily and efficiently.
Buffer tanks are commonly used with air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, biomass boilers, solid-fuel appliances and some commercial boiler systems. These heat sources often work best when they can run for longer periods rather than repeatedly switching on and off.
When the heating demand is lower than the heat source’s minimum output, the buffer tank absorbs the excess heat. This stored heat can then be released back into the heating system when required. By doing so, the buffer tank reduces short cycling, where the boiler or heat pump starts and stops too frequently. Short cycling can reduce efficiency, increase wear on components and shorten the life of the heat source.
A heating buffer tank may also provide hydraulic separation between the heat-source circuit and the building’s heating circuits. This allows different pumps and flow rates to operate without interfering with one another. It can be particularly useful where a system contains several heating zones, underfloor heating circuits, radiators or fan-assisted heaters.

Some buffer tanks are simple two-port vessels used mainly to add system volume. Others have four connections and act as both a buffer and a low-loss header.
The correct buffer tank size depends on the heat source’s minimum output, required minimum running time, system water volume and temperature difference. An oversized tank may waste space and increase standing heat loss, while an undersized tank may not prevent cycling effectively. For this reason, the tank should be selected as part of the overall hydraulic system design.
