Do all heat pumps need a buffer tank? No, not all heat pump systems need a buffer tank. Whether a buffer tank is required depends on the heat pump manufacturer’s instructions, the system’s water volume, the type of heat emitters, the control arrangement, and the minimum flow rate through the heat pump.
A correctly designed heat pump system may operate without a buffer tank when it has sufficient water volume, unrestricted circulation and a stable heating demand. For example, a large underfloor heating system can provide considerable water volume and thermal mass, allowing the heat pump to operate for long, efficient cycles.
However, a buffer tank may be beneficial where the heating system contains several small zones, thermostatic controls or actuators that can close and significantly reduce the available water flow. It provides additional system volume and helps prevent the heat pump from switching on and off too frequently. This short cycling can reduce efficiency, increase component wear and make room temperatures less stable.
A buffer tank can also provide energy for the heat pump’s defrost cycle, particularly with air-source heat pumps. Where separate pumps operate on the heat-pump and heating-system circuits, a four-port buffer tank may provide hydraulic separation. However, poor sizing or incorrect connection can cause unwanted water mixing, increasing return temperatures and reducing heat pump efficiency.
In some installations, a smaller two-port volumiser is preferable. A volumiser increases system water content without necessarily providing hydraulic separation.
Therefore, a buffer tank should not be fitted automatically to every heat pump. The designer should first confirm the manufacturer’s minimum water volume and flow requirements. The vessel should only be included where it provides a clear operational or hydraulic benefit.
