Heat pump air curtain – low temperature hot water air curtains from Flexiheat UK

We have developed a line of heat pump air curtains that have been specifically designed to work with the lower water temperature that a high energy efficiency heat pump can produce. This lower water temperature, which is a problem for air curtains that aren’t designed to work with heat pumps, results in very poor heating performance, very tepid leaving air temperatures, and a system that doesn’t work satisfactorily.

Energy-saving and environmentally friendly

However, due to the increase in heat pump heating systems and the great energy efficiency that these systems produce, we have developed a heat pump air curtain range that has larger heat exchanger surface areas, to extract the heat required for the air curtain to achieve the required performance.

A heat pump air curtain is designed to be installed above entrances or doorways and form a “thermal curtain” that keeps heated or cooled indoor air separate from the outside air. Using a water fed heat pump in conjunction with this is a very energy-efficient technique for achieving this.

Applications

These air curtains are typically used in commercial premises when an open door is required to provide uninterrupted access or when movement through the doorway is so heavy that the door must remain open for extended periods of time to prevent energy or heat loss and maintain comfort levels in places such as shopping malls, banks, or hotels, among others.

These air curtains can also be used in non heating mode or fan only mode, which then makes them an ambient air curtain unit, So in the summer, if you have air conditioned cool air, then you can keep that cool air within the space that the air curtain system is installed, resulting in energy saving and lower energy costs for your cooling system.

Heat pump technology

Air to water heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the outside air, which is then transferred to generate and provide hot water heating.

They are extremely efficient, as an air source heat pump consumes just 1 kW of electricity for every 3 to 4 KW of energy it produces.

This is known as the coefficient of performance, or COP.

The efficiency of ground source heat pumps is about a 400% energy efficiency ratio, generating 4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity used. They can create this higher efficiency throughout the year because the temperature in the ground is more stable than external air temperatures.

Climate control energy efficiency

These air curtains are powered by EC fan motors, which have up to 50% more energy efficiency than typical AC fan motors and weigh less, allowing for simpler installation and ecological shipping.

Designated the “Elis AX” range of heat pump air curtains specification –

Each air curtain variation is offered in four lengths: 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, and 2.5 m long models – so we can cover most door or opening air curtain requirements.

Each air curtain has either a 3 or 4 row hot water exchanger installed, which ensures high heating power output even when using low-temperature heat sources such as a heat pump or condensing boilers running on a 50/30C heating circuit to power the unit.

There are up to 16 distinct types of the EliS AX curtain, each with a different maximum mounting range, length, and number of heat exchanger rows.

Optiflow air system

“Optiflow” technology ensures an energy efficient airflow through the heated air door /curtain and guarantees high thermal comfort.

How does it work? The air enters the curtain via two air intakes: the lower and the upper intake. Then the air stream flows evenly throughout the entire area of the heat exchanger. Next, the hot air stream passes through the fans and compression chamber and is directed towards two adjustable, dynamic outlet louvres that create three separate air streams, ensuring an excellent air barrier and additional thermal comfort in the room.

Mounting options for these air curtains

These air curtains can be mounted in a horizontal mounting installation or vertical mounting installation configuration, with the larger air curtain models blowing 4.5 Metres in either direction.
