What is Infrared Heat?

Infrared is an ingredient of the electromagnetic spectrum. It’s a type of radiated heat – the most primitive form of heat we know. It is 100 percent natural and  forms the basis of heat we ourselves radiate and soak up. The warmth of the sun on our skin? The relaxing and soothing glow of an open fire? The warm feeling when we sit in  close proximity to other people? These are all examples of Infrared heat.

A basic principal of heat transfer is that heat moves from hot to cold spaces. We absorb infrared heat when we’re colder than our surroundings. We radiate infrared heat when we’re warmer than our surroundings. That’s why infrared is used in incubators for babies – because we absorb infrared so easily, it’s the most effective way to provide us with comfort heating. And that is why infrared thermal imaging is used by the police to find criminals on the run: their bodies radiate infrared heat into the cold and make them easier to find. What makes infrared radiation so special is that it heats the objects and people in its path as opposed to just heating the air. This makes infrared heating much more efficient than convection heating – which is the form of heating used by conventional radiators and oil or gas central heating systems. Convected heat, which is the transfer of heat from one place to another by the movement of fluids, warms the air, which circulates uncontrollably and leaves the fabric of the room cool. Direct radiated heat warms everything it comes in contact with: bringing a lasting, comfortable heat to your home whilst consuming less energy.

 

The benefits of infrared heaters

The main benefit in using infrared heating as opposed to other forms of heating is energy saving. Infrared heating works by heating the surface area of a room, rather than the volume (as is the case the traditional convection heaters), which means they are heating considerably less to provide the same amount of heat

How does infrared heating work

Infrared heaters work in a similar way to which the sun heats the earth. Invisible heat rays travel through the air bouncing off the surfaces of objects and that is how everything around us absorbs the heat. Unlike traditional heating, Infrared heating does not dry the air.

Electric Infrared Heater – There are a number of advantages in using a radiant heat source as opposed to a convection heat source when it comes to comfort heating:

  • A radiant heater directly heats objects in an environment, not the air in between. So you are heating a surface area of an object in an environment which warm up and turns the environment into a 360° radiator. This effect is felt less with heated air which transfers heat to an object poorly
  • Radiant heat has a higher “flux” (watts output per metre per degree centigrade of the heater) than convection heating. You require less radiant heat for less time to do the job of more convection heat for more time
  • You can manage the heater by a thermostat set to a lower air temperature because it is the environment that heats up first, not the air
  • Objects retain heat better than air, so residual energy sustain temperature in the environment for longer e.g. if a door is opened to a colder room, or when the thermostat turns off the heat source
